Capturing the Moment — Interviews with Budding Suzhou Photographers

May 2, 2017

Photography is a norm for most, a hobby for many and a passion for others. In this short series on photography a number of young Suzhou photographers will be introduced and share their impressions and views on this form of art. The first is Ruiwen Ding (Raven), who is an undergraduate student at Xi’an Jiao Tong-Liverpool University.

Q: Raven, can you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

A: “I am a year-2 student from XJTLU, an art lover majoring in financial mathematics”

Q:When did you first become interested in photography and what techniques do you employ?

A: “The enthusiasm for art originated from learning the piano and painting when I was a little girl. I am keenly sensitive to powerful color and charming details and I was attracted by the stunning pictures in the photography magazines when I was in junior high school. Although I don’t have much professional knowledge in terms of evaluating the composition or elements of a picture, I always try to find the most appropriate photo angles. I like to use the natural light to create a unique shot because this can help to capture the subtle beauty in daily life and I believe I’m reasonably successful in this respect. I also usually use filter apps to adjust the photos.

Q: Do you have any suggestions for keen amateur photographers based on your experiences?

A: “ From my perspective I have three suggestions which are as follows. Firstly, the background of a picture should be as clean as possible. Most of the time, no matter how beautiful the object is, with a messy background, the picture often brings an uncomfortable feeling. Secondly, I would recommend that the lines in the picture should be parallel to the borders of the photo in order to enhance the sense of harmony.  Moreover, some convenient photo filter apps such as VSCO, Instasize, snapseed and Foodie (especially with regards to food pictures) are highly recommended.”

Q: We asked if you could attach some of you own work and the pictures can be viewed above. Do you have any comments you’d like to share on these?

A: “ I hope that any viewers will like my work, and I also hope that everyone can really enjoy the process of finding beauty in their daily lives.”
