One night in Suzhou

Last updated on Feb 28, 2012

Once night falls, a diverse facet of Suzhou beauty is illuminated under the city lights, sparkling on the shores and reflected in the town’s rippling waterways.

Of all the night views, Pingjiang Road is a must. The road is endowed with a quaint and tranquil ambience, which stands in striking contrast with the noisy outside world. However, there is a teahouse named “Deep Down in Wuyuan” with daily authentic local opera performances known as ballad singing in the Suzhou dialect. Visitors can take in the charm of ancient Suzhou’s music while sipping on the branded tea served in covered teacups.

Shiquan Street is also popular among foreigners. It has gained popularity due to a combination of teahouses and bars that draw throngs of travelers as the night advances, turning the street into a cultural melting pot. Not far away is the exceptionally small garden Wangshi Yuan, one of China’s World Cultural Heritage Sites, incorporating every element considered crucial to the classical garden. The garden’s magical mix boasts a central lake, discreet connecting corridors, pavilions with miniature courtyards, screens, delicate latticework, and above all an entire structure to “frame a view,” as if looking at a perfectly balanced photograph. Regular evening Chinese opera performances, including local Kun Qu, take place here.

The downtown street in Suzhou High-tech District offers more than 80 Korean and Japanese gourmet restaurants. A variety of specials such as Teppanyaki, Sushi, Japanese hand-stretched noodles, Korean hotpot and grilled food are available in these restaurants.
