Public Transportation Card

Last updated on Feb 28, 2012

Introduction

Suzhou Public Transportation Card, or 苏州通卡 (su1zhou1tong1ka3), is locally referred to as the “electronic purse.” The card has earned this nickname because it can not only be used to pay transportation fees on local buses and taxis, but also for purchases at supermarkets, gardens, department stores, restaurants, utilities and gas stations. The card is accepted at more than 8,000 spots. So it’s no surprise that the card is popular among residents and more than 2 million Suzhou Public Transportation Cards have been distributed since the card was introduced to the public in December 2003.
You can purchase the card at 15 service centers. The flagship service center is on 56 Fenghuo Road and operates daily from 8:30am to 5pm. For more detailed information, please check www.szcic.com. At present no English version of the Website is available.
On initial purchase, according to the transport regulations, the buyer should pay 40 yuan (US$6.31) for the card and deposit at least 100 yuan for future use. The card will be depreciated by 1 yuan per month from the date of first use. If you don’t want the card anymore, you can return it to any of the service centers and get a refund of 40 yuan minus the depreciated value.
And remember: all taxis must accept payment from these cards otherwise the rider has the right to refuse payment.

Recharge

You can recharge the transport card at all the service centers, 20 Kedi convenience stores, some telecom service centers and the self-service centers of Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of Communications and Bank of Jiangsu.

Policy

You can enjoy more discounts when taking public buses in Suzhou with the card. Starting from September 2011, people with Suzhou Public Transport Cards can enjoy a discount of 40 percent on bus fares and from December 2011 a free bus service has become available for all disabled people.
People above 70 years old also enjoy the free bus service. Those from 60 to 69 years old and primary, middle and secondary school students enjoy a monthly bus pass that costs only 20 yuan.
