Originally named Chongxuan Temple and constructed in the second year of the reign of Tianjian of Emperor Liangwudi in 503 AD, Chongyuan Temple belongs to the same era as Hanshan Temple, Lingyan Temple, and Baosheng Temple in Suzhou. Chongyuan Temple was destroyed in the 1970s and reconstructed in November 2003.

On November 17, 2007, Chongyuan Temple reopened. The renewed temple, located at the picturesque Yangcheng Lake peninsula, covers an area of over 20 hectares. The mid-lake Guanyin Pagoda harmonizes gracefully with Chongyuan Temple, showing a unique and magnificent complex dedicated to Guanyin, a bodhisattva who is known as the female Buddhist deity in China. Moreover, you can see the highest above-water Guanyin Pavilion and the highest indoor Guanyin Statue in China; Brahma’s Voice Bell Giving 1st Sound and Rhyme constructed in the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD); as well as the highest and largest Mahavira Palace in China if you enter the Buddha Hall. A reproduction of its antecedent, the new Chongyuan Temple is one with a complete triad of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.

Above all, Chongyuan Temple is a great place on the banks of Yangcheng Lake for sightseeing, worshipping and relaxing.
